Game Overview
In Chuck-A-Luck, players wager on which numbers will appear when the banker rolls three dice. Players can bet on numbers from 1 to 6, hoping their chosen number comes up on one, two, or all three dice for a payout. It’s a game of pure chance, making it exciting for all ages and skill levels!

What You’ll Need
- Three six-sided dice
- Chips or tokens for betting
- A Chuck-A-Luck board with six numbered squares, one for each number from 1 to 6. If you don't need anything fancy, this can easily be printed or drawn on a sheet of paper.
Number of Players
Any number of players can join the game, all betting against a single banker.
How to Play
- Place Your Bets
At the start of each round, players place their chips on one or more numbers on the Chuck-A-Luck board, betting on numbers they think will appear on the upcoming roll.
- Roll the Dice
Once all bets are placed, the banker rolls the three dice (or, in some versions, spins a “birdcage,” a wire cage holding the dice, to roll them). The dice results determine which players win and which lose.
- Determine the Outcome and Payouts
If your chosen number appears on at least one of the dice, you win. The banker pays according to the number of times your chosen number shows up:- 1 Match: The banker pays 1 to 1 (even money) if your number appears on one die.
- 2 Matches: The banker pays 2 to 1 if your number appears on two dice.
- 3 Matches: The banker pays 3 to 1 if your
number appears on all three dice.
If your chosen number doesn’t appear on any of the dice, you lose your stake.

Example of a Winning Bet
Let’s say you place two chips on the number 6. The banker rolls the dice, and the results are 3, 6, and 6. Since your number 6 appears twice, you win at 2 to 1 odds. The banker pays you four chips plus your original two-chip bet, for a total of six chips.
Variations of Chuck-A-Luck
There are a few fun variations of Chuck-A-Luck you might come across:
- Crown and Anchor: In this version, instead of numbers, the dice display symbols like a crown, anchor, spade, heart, diamond, and club. The board also displays these symbols, and players place bets on which symbols will appear in the roll.
- Hoo Hey How: A Chinese version of Chuck-A-Luck, Hoo Hey How replaces numbers with maritime symbols like fish and crabs. The gameplay remains the same, with players betting on which symbols will show up on the dice.
- Birdcage Chuck-A-Luck: Some versions of Chuck-A-Luck use a wire “birdcage” shaped like an hourglass to roll the dice. The banker rotates the cage to toss the dice instead of rolling them by hand, adding a little flair to the game.
Tips for Playing Chuck-A-Luck
While Chuck-A-Luck is a game of luck, keep in mind that the odds generally favor the banker, so it’s best to play for fun and keep bets manageable. Since there’s no skill involved, it’s a great game for beginners and seasoned players alike who are looking to enjoy a quick, casual betting game.
Chuck-A-Luck brings the thrill of chance in a simple format. Whether you’re rolling dice by hand or spinning them in a birdcage, each round is an opportunity to see if luck is on your side!
