Crag is a simple, strategic dice game that might be considered Yahtzee's "little brother". Played with just three six-sided dice, Crag challenges players to roll for specific combinations and allocate their results to a score sheet. The game is quick to learn and offers exciting scoring opportunities, making it a great option for casual and competitive players alike.

The goal of Crag is to roll dice combinations that match specific scoring categories on the score sheet. Players take turns rolling and assigning their scores, aiming for the highest total after 13 rounds.

Crag can be played with any number of players, but it works best with 2 to 5 players.

How to Play Crag

Gameplay Overview

The game consists of 13 rounds, with each player taking one turn per round. Choose a starting player, and play proceeds clockwise around the table.

  1. Roll the Dice: On your turn, roll all three dice.
  2. Reroll (Optional): You may keep any number of dice and reroll the remaining dice once.
  3. Assign Your Score: Choose a category on the score sheet and record your result. Each category can only be used once.
  4. Mandatory Scoring: If your dice do not match any remaining categories, you must enter a score of zero in one of them.

The game continues until all players have filled in all 13 categories on their score sheet.

Crag Score Sheet and Scoring Categories

Each player has one column on the score sheet with the following 13 scoring categories, one per row:

Fixed-Value Categories

  • Crag (50 points): A pair and a single die, the sum of which is exactly 13 (e.g., 6-6-1, 5-5-3, 4-4-5).
  • Thirteen (26 points): A combination of any three numbers totaling exactly 13 (e.g., 3-4-6).
  • Three of a Kind (25 points): All three dice showing the same number (e.g., 5-5-5).
  • Straights (20 points each):
    • High Straight: 4-5-6
    • Low Straight: 1-2-3
    • Even Straight: 2-4-6
    • Odd Straight: 1-3-5

Variable Point Categories

These rows correspond to a number from 1 to 6. When scoring in one of these rows, add up only the dice that match the chosen number.

Examples:

  • Rolling 1-2-3 and scoring in the 1’s row = 1 point.
  • Rolling 2-5-5 and scoring in the 5’s row = 10 points (5+5).
  • Rolling 3-3-6 and scoring in the 3’s row = 6 points (3+3).

Example Turn

John rolls 3-6-6 on his turn.

He decides to keep the 6s and reroll the 3. If he were to roll a 1 on his reroll, he could score in the Crag row (6-6-1). If he were to roll another 6, he could score in Three of a Kind (6-6-6). However, he rolls a 5, making his final result 6-6-5. He chooses to score 12 points in the 6’s row (6+6).

Winning the Game

After 13 rounds, all categories on the score sheet will be filled. Players total their scores, and the highest score wins!
